DASH-CAMHARDWIRE. Power, grounding, fuse selection, cable routing, parking mode, and the checks worth doing before deciding you somehow fried the ECM.
64 things worth checking

Dash cam and correct hardwire kit Parking-mode support confirmed Correct fuse-tap style for the vehicle Fuse for the original circuit Properly sized fuse for the dash-cam circuit Low-voltage cutoff available and configured High-endurance memory card installed Vehicle fuse chart and camera instructions ready
Digital multimeter or quality circuit tester Fuse puller Wire stripper and proper crimping tool Trim-removal tools Torx and socket set Flashlight Electrical tape or cloth harness tape Zip ties or removable cable clips Spare fuses OBD scanner or BMW diagnostic app Safety glasses and gloves
Choose a camera position without blocking the driver’s view Confirm the lens has a clear view through the wiper-swept area Identify constant-power and switched/ACC requirements Test candidate fuses instead of trusting an online fuse number Avoid safety, engine-management, airbag, ABS, and restraint-system circuits Verify candidate power with the car awake and after it enters sleep mode Photograph the fuse panel before changing anything Record every fuse position and rating Plan a cable route that stays clear of airbags Confirm the hardwire kit’s wire labels—do not rely on color alone
Turn the vehicle off before making final connections Orient each fuse tap so power enters through its supply side Keep the factory fuse in the factory-circuit position Install the correctly sized dash-cam fuse in the accessory position Connect BATT/constant to a verified constant-power circuit Connect ACC to a circuit that shuts down as required Attach ground to clean, unpainted chassis metal Make every crimp mechanically secure Insulate all exposed conductors Seat each fuse tap fully without forcing the fuse panel Secure the converter so it cannot rattle or pull on wiring
Leave enough slack at the camera for adjustment and removal Tuck the cable without pinching or sharply bending it Route around the airbag path—not across or in front of it Keep wiring away from pedals, steering components, and seat tracks Protect cable where it crosses sharp metal edges Secure excess cable without creating a tight coil Confirm every trim panel and weather seal sits correctly Verify side-curtain airbag trim is not held open by the cable
Confirm the camera starts with the vehicle Confirm it records and saves a playable file Turn the vehicle off and verify the expected parking-mode behavior Allow enough time for the BMW to enter sleep mode Check that the camera does not remain in driving mode indefinitely Verify the low-voltage cutoff setting Confirm the vehicle wakes and starts normally Scan for new fault codes Check that no warning lights remain Test GPS, rear camera, microphone, and app connection if equipped
Check battery voltage after an overnight parking-mode test Review footage from both driving and parking modes Look for rattles, loose trim, or a sagging cable Recheck fuse taps and ground if the camera resets or loses parking mode Format and test the memory card on a regular schedule If multiple unrelated faults appear, stop and recheck the power source before assuming a module failed
IMBOURJ NOTE If the car suddenly throws a pile of unrelated faults, stop. Check the fuse tap, power source, ground, and battery voltage before writing the ECM’s obituary. One important thing. This is a preparation checklist—not a vehicle wiring diagram. Test every circuit on your own car, follow the dash-cam manufacturer’s instructions, and keep wiring away from airbag deployment paths. If you are unsure about a safety-critical circuit, use a qualified installer.
