01 Parts and specifications Correct spark plugs for the engine, tune, and fuel All six plugs match by brand and part number Replacement ignition coils or boots available if inspection finds damage Spark-plug torque confirmed: 23 Nm Target gap confirmed: 0.020 in or 0.022 in , based on the tune and plug combination Vehicle-specific installation information ready
Thin-wall spark-plug socket that fits the plug and cylinder head Extensions and ratchet Torque wrench that accurately covers 23 Nm Spark-plug gap gauge Proper gapping tool that moves the ground strap without pressing on the center electrode Compressed air or a clean method for clearing the plug wells Pick or small tool for releasing coil connectors Flashlight Magnetic pickup tool Paint marker or labels for keeping coils organized Gloves and eye protection
Let the engine cool before removing or installing plugs Disconnect anything required for safe access and keep the ignition off Remove the engine cover and intake pieces needed for access Photograph hose, connector, and harness routing before moving anything Label ignition coils by cylinder if they will return to the same locations Release coil connectors carefully—do not pull on the wiring Inspect coil boots for oil, coolant, cracks, swelling, or carbon tracking Clear dirt and debris from every plug well before loosening a plug
Remove one plug at a time and keep it identified by cylinder Compare color, deposits, wear, and damage across all six old plugs Investigate oil, fuel wetness, heavy deposits, cracked porcelain, or a plug that looks different from the others Confirm every new plug is undamaged before installation Measure each new plug gap—do not assume it is correct out of the box Set each plug to 0.020 in or 0.022 in as required for the setup Adjust only the ground electrode and avoid contact with the center electrode or porcelain Recheck the gap after every adjustment Keep the plug threads clean and dry unless the exact service procedure says otherwise
Lower each plug into the well without dropping it Start every plug by hand through the extension to prevent cross-threading Stop immediately if a plug does not thread smoothly Seat the plug fully by hand before using the torque wrench Torque each spark plug to 23 Nm Do not add an extra pull after the torque wrench clicks Inspect and clean each coil boot before reinstalling Seat every ignition coil fully Reconnect every coil connector and confirm its lock is engaged Return all harnesses, grounds, clips, and intake parts to their original positions
Account for every tool, old plug, fastener, and removed part Start the engine and listen for a smooth, even idle Stop and investigate any misfire, fuel smell, unusual tapping, warning light, or loose connection Scan for fault codes if the engine runs differently or a warning appears Take a short, gentle test drive before applying heavy load Recheck for stored or pending misfire codes Record the date, mileage, plug brand, part number, gap, and torque Keep the old plugs organized long enough to compare them if a problem appears
IMBOURJ NOTE Measure every gap. “Pre-gapped” is a shipping condition—not proof that all six plugs match your setup. One important thing. This checklist is built around my BMW N55 setup and does not replace the factory procedure. The 0.020-inch and 0.022-inch gaps are setup-dependent choices—not interchangeable universal settings. Confirm the correct plug, gap, and procedure for your exact engine, tune, fuel, and hardware before installation.
