Correct engine oil specification and viscosity for the vehicle and conditions Enough oil for the complete service fill Correct oil-filter element Two new rubber filter-cap O-rings: one large and one small New drain-plug sealing washer or approved replacement drain plug Replacement drain plug ready if the existing threads or head are questionable Vehicle-specific oil capacity and torque specifications ready
Oil-filter-cap socket that fits correctly Socket and ratchet for the drain plug Torque wrench covering the required settings Drain pan with enough capacity Funnel Floor jack and properly rated jack stands—or approved ramps Wheel chocks Gloves, eye protection, shop towels, and absorbent material Container for transporting used oil and the old filter Flashlight for the final leak inspection
Park on a solid, level surface Bring the oil to a safe warm temperature—not hot enough to burn you Confirm the car is secure before working underneath it Open the hood and verify the oil-fill cap and filter housing are accessible Inspect the filter housing, oil pan, and drain-plug area for existing leaks Remove the oil-fill cap Position the drain pan for the oil stream and wind Confirm the drain plug can be loosened before fully opening the filter housing
Loosen the drain plug carefully and keep hands clear of the oil stream Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip Inspect the drained oil and drain plug for unexpected metallic debris Remove the old filter and both old rubber O-rings from the filter cap: one large and one small Inspect the old filter for glitter, fragments, collapsed pleats, or unusual debris Clean the filter-cap and housing sealing surfaces without leaving lint Install both new rubber O-rings in their correct filter-cap grooves—not against the cap flange Lightly lubricate both new O-rings with clean engine oil Install the new filter element in the correct orientation Install a new sealing washer or approved drain-plug seal Start the drain plug and filter cap by hand to avoid cross-threading Torque the oil drain bolt to 27 Nm Torque the oil-filter housing cap to 25 Nm
Add slightly less than the full specified capacity before the first level check Reinstall the oil-fill cap Account for every tool, cap, washer, towel, and removed panel Start the engine and verify the oil-pressure warning goes out promptly Shut the engine down immediately if oil pressure does not build or a major leak appears Let the engine idle while checking the filter housing and drain plug for leaks Reinstall the underbody panel and lower the vehicle safely Follow the vehicle procedure for checking the oil level Add oil in small amounts until the level is correct Do not overfill
Reset the oil-service reminder only after the work is complete Record the date, mileage, oil brand, viscosity, specification, and filter used Dispose of used oil and the filter through an approved recycling location Check the parking spot and underbody for leaks after the first drive Recheck the oil level after the engine completes the required measurement cycle Investigate any new warning, smell, smoke, noise, or oil loss Keep the receipt and service record
IMBOURJ NOTE The oil change is easy. The expensive part starts when you rush the filter O-ring, cross-thread the drain plug, or assume the oil level is probably fine. One important thing. This checklist does not replace the factory procedure. Oil specification, capacity, drain-plug design, torque values, and level-check procedures vary by engine and vehicle. Use the information for your exact car, support it safely, and never work beneath a vehicle held up by a jack alone.
